Funeral service for Kenneth Scott “Scotty” Hughes will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024, in Letitia Baptist Church with Matt Kelly, pastor, officiating.
Burial will follow in Letitia Cemetery under direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home.
The family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Kenneth Scott (Scotty) Hughes died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024, in Lawton, Oklahoma, at the age of 75. He was born May 20, 1948, in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, to Kenneth Warren and Lottie Mae Woolley Hughes. Scotty had two siblings: Cheryl Lynn and Dennis Ray. Scotty grew up in Lawton, Oklahoma, where he attended Will Rogers Elementary, Central Junior High and graduated from Lawton High School in 1966. Scotty went on to attend college at Cameron College and Oklahoma State University. While attending Cameron, he was a member of the Aggie Club, president of the Rodeo Club, and a member of the Student Senate and the Lawton Saddle Club. After college, Scotty returned home to Lawton and lived there for the remainder of his life.
Scotty married Fran Rexene Spradlin in March 1968 in Fort Monroe, Va. Scotty and Fran welcomed two children together, Tiffani Dianne and Clinton Scott. She preceded him in death on May 7, 1981. In June 2000, Scotty married Candace Marie Chapman.
As a young boy, Scotty played football and baseball. Scotty developed a love for riding bulls while in high school and attended the Jim Shoulders Riding School. Scotty began his rodeo career soon after as a bullrider and continued riding bulls until 1978. During high school, Scotty was vice president of FFA and received his State Farmers Degree.
Scotty was a previous member of the Geronimo school board, and the Geronimo Lions Club. He received an Honorary FFA award from the Geronimo FFA. He was also an active member of the Comanche County Saddle and Sirloin Club, the Lawton Rangers Rodeo Club, and a founding member of the Geronimo Bullriding Club. Scotty also coached Little League when his children were young.
Scotty built and owned the Geronimo car wash from 1988 until selling it in 2001, and he was the owner and operator of Hughes Rentals from 1985 until his passing.
Scotty began employment with the civil service in 1974 at the Fort Sill Department of Public Works carpenter shop. In 1981 he left the carpenter shop and began working at the DPW inspection branch as a quality control inspector until 1985. From there he went to work for the United States Corp of Engineers as a lead construction representative until retiring in 2005. While employed, Scotty received the Hard Hat of the year award as well as the Outstanding Community Service Award. After a short stint of retirement, Scotty returned to work at Reynolds Army Community Hospital for MEDDAC as a lead construction representative. Scotty eventually retired in 2019.
Scotty had many hobbies including carpentry, and custom cabinet building. He loved bull riding, arm wrestling, working with the Lawton Rangers, his refurbished 1968 Ford Bronco, old Western movies and attending the National Finals Rodeo. He was very proud of his grandchildren and was always there to support them in their activities.
Scotty is survived by wife Candace of the home; daughter, Tiffani Dianne Burk and husband Dewayne of Lawton; son, Clinton Scott Hughes and wife Teri of Elgin; brother, Dennis Hughes and wife Lyn; eight grandchildren: Logan Burk and wife Rosie, Makenzie Ridenhour and husband Sam, Madison Good and husband Kameron, Kendal Bridges and husband Chase, Kelbi Hughes, Ty Hughes, Tate Hughes, Tukker Hughes, Austin Bartosovsky and Holden Bartosovsky; three great-grandchildren: Miley Ridenhour, Callahan Bridges, and Landyn Good; two nieces: Shawna McCune, Vonda Williams and husband Jerry; and one nephew, Justin Hughes; three great nephews: Deekota Williams and wife Sarah, Maverick Williams and Dylan Hughes and wife Josie; and one great niece, Kayla Hughes; and one great-great-nephew Mac Williams.
Scotty is also survived by many in-laws, including Peggy Spradlin, Bub Spradlin and wife Sherrie, Mary Gerlach, Becky Wade and husband Jeff, Dee Gunkel and husband Paul, Richard Taliaferro, Stacy Smith, Craig Chapman and wife Maymie, Bonner Sawyer, Jessy Smith, Jordan Smith and wife Julie, and son Gabe, Rae Smith and children Forrest and Winter, Stephanie Chapman, Curry Chapman and wife Jessica.
Scotty was preceded in death by his first wife Fran; parents: Kenneth and Lottie; and sister, Cheryl Taliaferro.
