Betty Joyce (Horne) Dickson was born near Cold Springs on Oct. 21, 1936 to James Edward “Jim” and Opal (Tanner) Horne. She graduated from Mountain Park High School and went to work civil service at Fort Sill. She retired in 1992 after 40 years. She passed away Friday, July 12, 2024 in Snyder. She was born and passed in her beloved Kiowa County.
Betty married Ralph Jesse Dickson on Nov. 25, 1955 and moved to Lawton. They had two children, Molly Suzanne and Ralph Jesse II. In 1962 they moved to the farm southwest of Lawton where they built a home. She and Ralph built the home piece by piece, tearing down old barracks and using the wood and windows in their home. As they had the money, doors and other building materials were purchased and modern conveniences were added. It took them seven years to complete their home. She grew a big garden and canned anything she could get a hold of all while working full-time at Ft. Sill. Betty would take one week vacation time in September to help sow wheat.
Betty served on the Comanche County Farm Bureau Women’s committee. She played piano and taught Sunday School at Antioch Church. Betty sewed all the clothes for herself and Molly. She drove tractors, helped work cattle, cooked wonderful meals for the family and workers, kept the enormous yard mowed, knew where every flower color was and loved to keep the pipe fence painted. Betty crocheted afghans and handmade quilts, giving most of them away.
She loved the farm, the life she and Ralph had built together. There were many family gatherings at the farm for grandchildren, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her children and their spouses: Molly and Darryl Tinney and Ralph and Janice Dickson; grandchildren: Danny (Laura), Ryan (Emily), Mitchell, Michael and Kim; great-grandchildren: Blake, Olivia, Fyscher, Faith and Hailee; her sister, Helen (Horne) Trotter; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters: Eleanor (Horne) Lance and Mary Ruth (Horne) Elred; brothers: James “Earl” Horne and Jack Horne and nieces: Becky Lynn Elred and Linda (Trotter) Greenwall.
Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Betty Dickson to Geronimo Volunteer Fire Department, 100 W. Main Street, Geronimo, OK 73543.
